Crop Art diaryA journey to the Minnestota State Fair Crop Art competition |
"How's that crop art coming along?" Other diaries: Lillian 2007. Soapy the Chicken 2006. Maggie Cheung 2005. Note: These are large downloads. |
For the 2007 Minnesota State Fair Crop Art competition, I did a picture of a character in the video game "We Love Katamari" -- in seeds. Oh, and the picture is also a clock. This crop art diary is presented blog-style with the latest picture on top. I also did a portrait of Lillian Colton this year. --David Steinlicht Monday, August 20, 2007

Decided to add single millet seeds at 12, 3, 6 and 9. Makes the clock a wee bit more useable without overwheming the design. --0.25 hours |

Spray painted the hands. On the edge, I painted with a color that's a little closer to the red millet color. Maybe I should go after the second hand, too? And, do I need to put some kind of mark at 12, 3, 6 and 9? Hmm. --2 hours |

Well, there's the clock. Wondering if I should paint the hands white. Or yellow. Also wondering if I should do something with the background of the small circle -- it looks dull. --0.01 hour |

A little amaranth and a couple times around the outside border with red millet. And it's done, except for the clock works, the clean up and the seed legend card. Shoot! I'm nowhere near done! --2 hours |

That's it -- mostly -- for the amaranth. --1 hour |

Amaranth. I think as I get closer to the Prince character, I need to use smaller seeds, so there's not a shadow-ridge of seed-size transition close to that drawing. The shadow ridge now defines another circle. That goes with the overall design. Right? --1 hour |

Millet. I thought I'd be done by today, too. But I took two days off. This weekend, I'll be done for sure! --1 hour |

Done with red millet. On to the just plain old millet. Again, putting the seeds on a curve to add visual interest -- and to disguise any mistakes in lining them up properly. --1 hour |

Red millet. I thought the patterns of the nubs on the ball would show up better when they were filled in. Now that they are almost done, it turns out they hardly show up at all. Live and learn. Well, I originally planned to do the image in just silhouette -- and that's what it's turned out to be. --1 hour |

Still fussing with the design. Did paste some seeds for the little guy (named "The Prince" in the Katamari games). His body is birdsfoot trefoil, the light parts are amaranth, his eyes are celosia, his nose and mouth are darker amaranth and the little knob on his antenna is red millet. The ball is also red millet. --4 hours |
Thursday, July 19, 2007I wanted to do a video game-themed seed art piece this year. The game "We Love Katamari" is family-friendly and the design of the game character lends itself to seeds. That's good enough for me! The design will be simple. I'm actually building this seed art on top of a clock. (Thank you, Lisa!) I took out the works, primed over the original picture and then painted the new design. I'll probably paint the clock hands white. |
So, there's the design, more or less. --2 hours |
